Poisoned the Netflix movie & ensuring food safety in the future

Bill Marler, attorney at Marler Clark, the food safety law firm, delivered a presentation on Netflix documentary 'Poisoned', the impact of the movie globally and his thoughts on how we can ensure food safety in the future. William (Bill) Marler is arguably the most prominent foodborne illness lawyer in America and a major force in food policy in the U.S. and around the world. The 2011 book 'Poisoned: The True Story of the Deadly E. coli Outbreak that Changed the Way Americans Eat' by best-selling author Jeff Benedict, chronicles the Jack in the Box outbreak and the rise of Bill Marler as a food safety attorney. The book was recently adapted into a documentary titled 'Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food' directed by Stephanie Soechtig and streaming now on Netflix. Following his presentation there was a live Q&A conducted by the Improving Food Safety webinar series host, Sterling Crew, President of the Institute of Food Science and Technology.

Karin Goodburn MBE Hon FIFST CSci FRSPH MSc BSc (Hons), Director General at the Chilled Food Association, delivers a presentation on 'Listeria: the law and best practice'. During the presentation, Karin talks about: - The microbiological risks to consumers from Listeria monocytogenes - The current legislation and best practice - Potential proposed legislation changes and their impact - Industry responses to the proposed changes Karin Goodburn specialises in chilled food science, technology, and regulatory affairs, as Director General of the Chilled Food Association and as a consultant, advising the government on policy, safety, and supply chain issues, providing technical guidance to manufacturers and representing industry in the UK and around the world. She has overseen the development of numerous industry and other guidelines and standards with regulators, industry and researchers, and works with the UN FAO/WHO, GFSI, UK Government, its agencies, the European federations and food professionals’ organisations’ steering groups. She is involved in the negotiation, interpretation and implementation of European law including the Microbiological Criteria for Foodstuffs Regulation 2073/2005, being one of the authors of a range of industry guidance thereon. She chairs the Food & Biocides Industry Group, the Industry Listeria Group and the SPS Certification WG and is an enforcer trainer including on 2073/2005 and high-risk foods.

While managing the company, she regularly judges culinary competitions. She was a skills expert and judge for the South African WorldSkills cookery competitions. June has assisted many chefs and restaurant owners to implement food safety systems in their establishments, and was appointed as the HACCP manager for 2 stadiums at the FIFA World Cup 2022 held in Doha, Qatar.
